When you are pregnant, you will find everyone seems to offer you advie. You’ll hear all sorts of tips, hints and ideas from those around you. Some of the information you’re given can be helpful, but some of the ideas are not necessarily true. You’d be amazed that, even in today’s modern society, how many people still believe in old wives’ tales. You’ll hear it all. How to determine the sex of your child, things you can do to bring on labor and what you can do to ensure a calm child — these are just a few of the information you’ll be given. So how do you know which to believe? How can you sort out fact from fiction?

The majority of the opinions a person hears are predictions of the baby’s sex. You will get all sorts of theories. Here is just a sampling of what you can be told. Some say that boys sit lower, while girls are carried higher. Others may actually believe that if the hair on your legs grows quickly, is a boy. Another involves threading a needle and then hanging it over your belly. If it roates in a clockwise pattern, you’ll have a girl.

Then there’s the ring test. Like the needle test, you hang a ring over your belly using a piece of string or yarn. If it swings like a pendulum, its a boy. If the motion of the ring is circular, you’ll have a girl instead. Yes, people have actually tried this. And there are many firm believers in this and numerous other methods. Take Marian for example. She is the mother of three. She swears by the ring test and says, “Every time I was pregnant I did the ring test. And every time it gave me an accurate prediction.”

During pregnancy, most women report craving special foods. Celebrities are not immune from this. For example, Davina McCall was in constant need for cream crackers. There are many theories about these cravings. Some people will tell you that the type of food your crave will determine the sex of your child. Often you’ll hear that the desire for sweets means a girl, while craving certain proteins such as meats or cheeses will signal a boy. You may also hear that if your child kicks a lot in the womb, he or she will always be an energetic person. Believing in these theories is a personal choice — some swear by them while others find they do not hold true for them.
